If you love coffee then you really need to check this company out. I now get a different bag of coffee sent to me directly each fortnight or so, and I’m finding it inspiring. I love the philosophy of this company, the way they work, the fact they still a relatively young startup but are growing rapidly.

They wrote a great blog post themselves, explaining why they don’t support fair trade. What many don’t know is that Fairtrade is an auditing firm; companies pay Fairtrade to audit their farms for safe and fair practices, and in turn farmers are guaranteed to be paid minimum wage.

Pact actually pay above the board to the farmers of the coffee that they supply, which also allows them to maintain their own quality standards. The company says that Fairtrade was a revelation when first introduced nearly 20 years ago, but times have changed, and more can be done running independently of this third party.

By cutting out the middleman, Pact are able to deal directly with the farmers and suppliers of coffee beans and able to support them and listen to their thoughts on the whole farming principle.

The social aspects of coffee drinking

coffee

I like coffee, who doesn’t though… but like all things it began as as a social drink.

That’s where I want to discuss why the Espresso is somewhat of an antisocical conundrum. Much like vodka shots. Get your caffeine fix and move on, bam, 1 minute and it’s gone. You can’t sit and read the newspaper or chat over that, and if you have too many you’re wired.

So, with respect to that, as much as I don’t mind shots of caffeine I do much appreciate a pot of coffee where I can lounge and take my time drinking it, and not for it to be gone in a mouthful… it also gives you an excuse to take a load off and relax, right?

Relax, that’s a rarely used word in the 21st Century, right?
