Porsche 911 – Buying a Porsche 911 sight unseen!

Porsche 911

Porsche 911 – 1984 Targa

A few years ago I wanted a ’66 Mustang Fastback, prices at the time were high… but now are even higher. Owning and driving a 57 year old, Left Hand Drive American car on today’s roads isn’t the most practical of ideas.

Fast forward a few years, a cancer diagnosis and recovery later, and I had changed my mind!

I had been lusting for a Porsche 911 for a long, long time. But I knew, that if I got one it had to be the OG, not just any other Porsche (of which there are currently many other, less expensive models). Alas, I wasn’t in the position 20 yrs ago to be buying anything remotely like this. But, when life gives you lemons, make lemonade!

I had been on the hunt for a long time scouring eBay, Car and Classic, and various other similar sites. I had spotted many cars but not having any experience of the marque or this specific model, I was going in blind.

I had emailed Ned from Hayburner, for some advice, sometime during 2022. I had been a subscriber of the magazine since around 2013, and always loved air-cooled cars and the scene. People who owned air-cooled cars just seemed a little more chilled.  Anyway, a few emails back and forth on what to look out for, and I was pointed in the direction of Irv, from Irv’s Restos, who had taken ownership of Ned’s 911 (you can read the back-story in the magazines).

A further exchange of emails and a price was agreed upon. The car had a misfire at the time and was being sent off to do some work prior to me receving the car. Blocked injectors and a rebuilt K-Tronic pump if I remember.

I finally received the car during November ’22 and over the next weeks started to put together a list of items (mostly electrical) that would need resolving before the MOT. So far I’ve fixed the horn, and reverted to a functional horn push on the steering wheel. It’s a learning curve and I’m working through 40 yrs worth of previous owner’s wiring hacks but where would the fun be if it was all plain sailing?
